Structural Engagement

Mechanical fasteners 

can’t spread the load.

When forces are applied to a 
mechanically-fastened assembly, the 
stresses are concentrated at a single  
point rather than distributed evenly  
over a broader area. This may lead to 
premature failure of the joint. When 
forces are applied to an adhesive bonded 
assembly, the stresses are distributed 
across the entire area of the bonded 
joint. This results in an overall stronger 
assembly, which provides the opportunity 
to reduce substrate thickness and thus 
the cost and weight of the assembly.

the benefits of fast process speeds with tough, durable,

bonding ferrite, alnico and neodymium iron boron permanent

Loctite

 Structural Adhesives for metal bonding have been specially 

formulated to provide tough, long-lasting bonds to metal surfaces, 
such as steel, galvanized steel, aluminum, sheet metal and stainless 
steel. These adhesives are capable of reducing or replacing the 
need for threaded fasteners, welds or rivets, resulting in a higher 
quality assembly. As a result, structural adhesives are ideal for 
use in agriculture and construction equipment, specialty vehicles, 
commercial furniture, appliances, signage, tub and spa, and  
structural building components.

Vibration is everywhere. 

Vibrational loosening  

is not.

Metal fabricators like the benefits of 
pneumatic pins because of their fast 
processing speeds. Unfortunately, the  
pins can wallow out of their parts  
during transportation due to vibrational 
loosening. However, when used in 
combination with structural adhesives, 
not only are the assemblies able to 
withstand stronger forces, but the pins  
are bonded in place by the adhesive, thus 
preventing them from wallowing out.

Structural Engagement

Less is more.  

Assemblies bonded with adhesives  
often provide higher bond strength  
versus those assembled with mechanical 
fasteners. However, some manufacturers 
cannot completely eliminate the use of 
mechanical fasteners, sometimes due to 
fast processing speed requirements and  
the cure time needed for adhesives. 
In these cases, manufacturers are able 
to significantly reduce the number 
of mechanical fasteners by using just 
enough to help “fixture” the part during 
assembly while the adhesive cures. 
The adhesive still absorbs the brunt 
of the force once cured, but allows the 
manufacturer to reduce the number of 
fasteners, thus reducing material costs.
