Thorlabs 50:50 Zinc Selenide Beamsplitters are optimized for use over a wavelength range of either 1 – 12 m or 7 – 14 m at a 45 angle of incidence. A beamsplitter coating is deposited on the front surface of each optic, while the back surface has an antireflection coating to improve transmission (see the Graphs tab for performance graphs). The beamsplitters for 7 – 14 m are available in 1/2″ (12.7 mm), 1″ (25.4 mm), or 2″ (50.8 mm) versions, while the beamsplitter for 1 – 12 m is available in a 1″ (25.4 mm) version. Each beamsplitter is engraved with the item # and an arrow indicating the transmission direction.
The AR coating improves the performance of these beamsplitters in two ways. First, it helps minimize the reflection losses observed with uncoated ZnSe optics, related to ZnSe’s high refractive index (2.4 at 10.6 m, see our Optical Substrates tutorial for more information on ZnSe). In addition, it prevents interference effects between light reflected from the front and back surfaces of the beamsplitter by reducing the average reflectance to less than 7% for the back surface. To further mitigate interference effects, the back surface has a 30 arcmin wedge so that light reflected by this surface does not propagate parallel to the incident light.
When handling optics, one should always wear gloves. This is especially true when working with zinc selenide, as it is a hazardous material. For your safety, please follow all proper precautions, including wearing gloves when handling these beamsplitters and thoroughly washing your hands afterward.
